Saturday was a glorious day – so warm & sunny! It was already 4pm when I had the sudden, compelling urge to go to the ocean. I asked Phil if we could please drop everything we were doing & quickly pack up some food & warmer clothes & drive to Salisbury beach in the RV. His answer – Yes!
Shaun wasn’t keen on the idea, but after talking about it, decided in favor of it. We scrambled to grab supper items & layering clothing. Bringing Buster was a no-go; he still won’t get anywhere near the RV, let alone actually get into it!
On the road – here we go! Made excellent time to Salisbury State Beach. It was nearly empty, so we were able to park right up by the dunes. We expected it to be cooler, but it wasn’t. The breezes were coming off of the land, so it felt like summer temperatures. We all wore shorts with light jackets & walked barefoot in the sand. The kids were able to tolerate the frigidly cold water, especially Shaun, who waded in & out of the waves. We walked all the way to the jetty, then followed the beach along the river/inlet. The campground had quite a few occupants, & we could smell the campfires – yummy!
The kids carved their names in the sand, and then had us do it. They collected smooth-surfaced stones & examined barnacles, broken shells & one live, squirting mussel.
We finally convinced the kids that it was time to turn back. The sun was hanging low & we knew the temperature would drop. Well, that ended up being right on the nose! Just as we re-approached the jetty, the winds shifted dramatically & the temperature instantly dropped about 20 degrees! The few families that had also been out & about were all hurrying back – the deep chill had caught everyone by surprise.
After hustling our shivering butts back to the RV – which was thankfully warm inside – we pulled out the galley slide & prepared supper. The generator allowed us to use the microwave for the first time. Alas, we hadn’t filled our fresh water tanks, so no one could use the bathroom. We drove over to the lot nearer the campground & used their facilities.
After driving back home (using the cruise control – what a delightful feature for the RV!) we decorated eggs for Easter. Then we watched a movie before bed (tried to get the kids good & tired so that they would sleep in the next morning – it didn’t work).
Ahh, what a great taste of summer!
